Hello Lucinda, I love reading your letters, you speak with honesty and gratitude for the season of life we are in. I love the idea of white space and leaving room for possibility. Deep down I know I like to have things planned out, but writing and art need more playfulness and experimentation, and my best words always emerge when I am willing to let go and see what happens. Thank you for the gentle reminder to make space for this in our week. Melbourne writers festival sounded wonderful. I am reading There are Rivers on the Sky by Elif Shafak, lyrical sweeping beautiful. I can highly recommend.
Thank you Kate for your incredibly kind words and reflection - it is important to know ourselves and how we operate best. Also, would you believe I had There are Rivers in the Sky out from the library a while back, I waited ages for it but suddenly all my holds came in at once (why!!) and I didn't get to it. I'm back on the holds list again and look forward to reading it - you're one of two so far in these comments who have recommended it, among so many others.
I was at Hannah’s session too and would have loved to see Samantha Harvey’s. Orbital was a beautiful book and Kate is such a brilliant interviewer. So inspired by Hannah’s words on dreams and Iceland and student exchanges and the midnight sun and am loving her memoir so far 💜
Also loving autumn weather and the rhythms of ordinary life right along with you!
I saw your IG story this morning! Fantastic that you were also there. I usually tune out when people start talking about their dreams, but I could have sat there all night listening to Hannah's dreams - just, wow. I am so looking forward to reading her memoir, I bought it yesterday at the festival. And how about the psychic 100 years later and so on - I had scared tears in the audience!!
Glad you're enjoying Autumn and daily life Cassy, thanks for taking the time to comment :)
Also - Samantha Harvey was such a beautiful speaker. I loved her Booker Prize speech and was so looking forward to seeing her yesterday. She and Kate did not disappoint!
Thanks Lucinda for this shout out! And for celebrating 'white space'. I am not much of a fiction reader but looking forward to reading "The River in the Sky" for my next book club. Elif Shafak is such a beautiful writer and always gives space to the more than human world
Thank you Sally! So many people are recommending this book right now, I am looking forward to reading it.
I read a lot of nonfiction too but have been feeling so frazzled and 'razzed up' by the topics I'm reading about (largely climate change or climate/nature related work) I feel I just need to slide into some comforting fiction for a minute for a little breather. When I turn to fiction I often read similarly deep topics in fiction form so am looking to branch out a little! Throughout last year in amongst my regular reading I listened to the whole Shetland series audiobooks by Ann Cleeves and I think this (although... murder...) really filled my cup - easy, cosy reading (and the murder elements are really quite tame!)
Love the concept of white space! Feels like it’s putting words to something I’ve been trying to practise more of. ☺️
I think we could all do with a bit more of it :)

Oh this happens to me so much, I wait and wait and then everything at once and I can’t read everything.
I also loved reading Still Life by Sarah Winman, I didn’t want it to end!
Ooh thanks Kate, I don't know that one - will look it up :)

I’m hoping the Orbital convo comes out as a podcast. Keep meaning to look up her Booker speech!
Yes the dreams and coincidences and the psychic story were just incredible! 🤯
I've actually been thinking about it all day and have been a bit scared of Agnes. What a wimp.
I am sure Samantha Harvey's interview will end up on the MWF podcast - surely! In the meantime I highly recommend the Booker speech.

I'm not far in and already love it!
